In medieval times any unknown person who came to a village who was not a part of that society or culture was called 'foreign'. Such a person can be called a foreigner in Hindi and a stranger in Persian, but two farmers living in the same village were not foreign to each other even though they belonged to different religions or castes.


The 'Rajputs' were prominent among the communities whose importance increased in the medieval period. Which is derived from 'Rajput' (meaning son of the king).
